Kostiainen is a favourite composer of choral societies because of his catchy and down-to-earth melodic inventiveness and an ability to handle choral resources with flexibility and panache. Jaakobin pojat is scored for children's choir while Jaakobin isot pojat is for mixed choir. The text for both pieces is formed from the names of Jacob's sons in the biblical tale. The modern approach of these two works is typical of Kostiainen's style.
