The suite The Japanese Seasons for SATB a cappella is dedicated to Erik Westberg's Vocal Ensemble. Alvin Vikman is a composer and pianist, and began his education at Lilla Akademien in Stockholm with Matthew Peterson as teacher. Later he studied with Jan Sandström and Fredrik Högberg in Piteå where he obtained a bachelor's degree in composition. Alvin says: “I have always been drawn to Japanese poetry and The Japanese Seasons is an exploration of this fascination, using madrigalism – a technique where the music mirrors the words. As a flower falls or white fabrics flutter in the wind, the music follows and mimics these movements. The specific poems used are from the Hyakunin isshu, a collection of older Japanese poems. The verses act as time capsules, providing glimpses of Japan from over a millennium ago. My music is an interpretation of the soundscape of ancient Japan, trying to capture the magic embedded in the poems.”
