"During the fall of 2018, VoNo Vocals (formerly Voces Nordicae) worked on a new interpretation of HC Andersen's The Girl with the Brimstone Sticks . At the heart of the performance is David Lang's evocative work The Little Match Girl Passion , in which Andersen's fairy-tale girl walks in the snow to sell matches on a fateful New Year's Eve. Who is she and where were we when she was abandoned? Together with seven professors in ethics, humanity, civil society knowledge and children's rights from Ersta Bräcke Sköndal University, the ensemble dug into these questions.
A complementary work was commissioned for the performance to further reflect on the essence of the performance and how the fairy tale could be interpreted today. Martin Gribbe contributed the poem that later became the basis for this work, Att se. It was first performed at the show's premiere on 11 October 2018 at the Folkoperan in Stockholm.
To see is composed for SATB divisi and violoncello, which can also be played by other instruments. It is also possible to perform the piece without an instrument.” - Martin Åsander
