Sven-Erik Bäck (1919-1994) was a uniquely versatile composer and chamber musician, with a rich output of original compositions that capture in different ways the shifting ideas and artistic ideals of the complex twentieth century. His systematic and far-reaching collaborations across art boundaries - with prominent poets, sculptors, choreographers and theologians - have left deep and lasting traces in Swedish cultural life, and made a number of his works and parts of his other musical activities internationally renowned.
Bäck's lingering presence in contemporary art music life's discussions, positionings and outlooks suggests that Swedish music life in 2020 - when Bäck would have already turned 100 years old - has not yet fully accepted the fact that the composer fell asleep a full 25 years ago. The author's hope is that this book will offer the possibility of being able to live with, and seek to understand, the music left behind by this wayward and admirable composer.
Mattias Lundberg, born 1976, is professor of musicology at Uppsala University. He has published books, articles and editions in many areas of music science and made a couple of hundred educational radio programs on music history and music theory topics on Sweden's Radio P2. His research deals, among other things, with the music of the late Middle Ages and the Reformation period in northern Europe, with historical compositional techniques, as well as with Swedish music history from all eras.
