Premiere of Mats Larsson Gothe's Cello Concerto
On Thursday, April 10, Mats Larsson Gothe 's Cello Concerto will premiere at the Stockholm Concert Hall. The concerto was written for Torleif Thedéen , with whom Mats has collaborated several times before.
"About my work, you can say that it is based on the experience and knowledge I have of Torleif Thedéen as a musician (and person). It is the third work I have written directly for him. Torleif is a unique musician in the way that he always does unpredictable things in his music making. He rarely plays something the same way twice. I have often been surprised, which is a wonderful feeling. This is of course based on the fact that he has such formidable control over his instrument. This in a way that you could say that he is one with his instrument. In this way, he can rise above the purely technical aspects of playing the cello and concentrate on what the music is supposed to convey.
The cello concerto takes advantage of all the "sentiment" a cello is capable of. Longing, dreams, pain, melancholy. But also anger and resignation. I have used the entire register of the instrument in terms of expression, and tried to find a clear role for the cello in relation to the orchestra. Kaija Saariaho once said that when you write a solo concerto you have to create a "persona" for the soloist, a role, a character. I think I have done that in this cello concerto. But to say what it is about is impossible," says Mats Larsson Gothe.
Torleif Thedéen will premiere the cello concerto together with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Johannes Gustavsson. There will be two concerts at the Stockholm Concert Hall on April 10 and 12.
