New music by Daniel Börtz at Change Music Festival

Tre korta berättelser (Three short stories) for viola composed for Malin Broman and a Concerto grosso dedicated to Simon Crawford-Phillips will both have their world premieres at the Change Music Festival in western Sweden on August 21 and 22.

"Malin Broman is a unique musician. During our many years of collaboration, I have been fascinated by her ability to switch between different string instruments. She does it with such ease and elegance and plays both violin and viola at the absolute highest level. She has performed my double concerto for violin and viola a large number of times, but now I have written a pure viola solo for her – my first," says Daniel Börtz.

“Concerto grosso borrows its title from JS Bach. His Brandenburg Concertos have meant a lot to me. However, the music itself in my own concerto grosso has very little to do with Bach. Just like the Brandenburg Concertos, it is written for fourteen solo musicians and has a similar energy, but without any Baroque elements. The idea was born during a train journey with Simon Crawford-Phillips when we talked about the fact that most of my music is written for symphony orchestra. I was attracted to try the smaller format and am very happy that Simon is now premiering the concerto.”

Thursday, August 21 at 6 p.m., Varbergs Teater: Classical After Work/Admiration of Composers. Börtz: Tre korta berättelser (Three Short Stories) for Viola, premiere.

Friday, August 22 at 6 pm, Kungsbacka Teater: : Classic After Work with jazz singer Isabella Lundgren. Börtz: Concerto grosso, world premiere.
