Gehrmans launches Swedish Choral Music in the USA
Humanism and faith in the future dominate when Gehrmans Musikförlag launches Swedish choral music in the United States at one of the world's largest choral events, attended by conductors from many of the country's 270,000 choirs. The publisher brings not only the world-famous, classic Swedish choral music, but also contemporary music by female composers.
Swedish choral music has emerged from Sweden’s popular movements and stands on a strong democratic and artistic foundation, says Stefan Hansen, Sweden’s Cultural Counselor in Washington, D.C., who supports the initiative. In the U.S., Sweden is a well-known and highly regarded choral nation, and the launch of Gehrmans Musikförlag’s composers further strengthens our successful music export.
The "Swedish choral miracle" is a well-known concept worldwide, largely thanks to the legendary conductor Eric Ericson. His close collaboration with the country's leading composers elevated the quality of both choral singing and music, and the tradition remains strong today.
For this initiative, Gehrmans Musikförlag has enlisted the help of the award-winning Swedish-American composer Matthew Peterson, who, in Ericson’s spirit, works closely with choirs such as the Swedish Radio Choir and Sofia Vokalensemble. Peterson came to Sweden after studying with another influential Swede, Sven-David Sandström, and is now based in Dalarna. Also participating in Dallas is composer and conductor Ulrika Emanuelsson.
During the conference, Gehrmans Musikförlag will present music both at its booth and in seminars and will offer "Swedish fika" in collaboration with the Honorary Consulate in Dallas. The music themes range from hope to human rights, with lyrics written by both renowned Swedish poets and Native American authors. All selected music will be available for download.
– We know that there is great interest in our composers and their music in the U.S., says Gehrmans CEO Filiz Erat Edhlund. With our launch of digital sheet music, we hope it will be easier for those looking for exciting repertoire to find us. In this way, we can continue to spread high-quality Swedish music worldwide, at a time when the importance of culture is greater than ever.
