Jörgen Dafgård is primarily known for his colorful orchestral music and solo concertos. He got off to a flying start in his career as a composer when, immediately after completing his diploma education at the Malmö Academy of Music, he won Sveriges Radio's and Berwaldhallen's composition competition with the orchestral work Veils in 2000. It then placed in the top ten in the international Masterprize competition in 2003.
In 2013, Jörgen Dafgård returned to Berwaldhallen as “Spring Composer”, where his orchestral music was presented by the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra during five concerts. The highlight was the premiere of the clarinet concerto Caprism, composed for the soloist Andreas Sundén, where Dafgård was inspired by the beautiful landscape of Capri.
Several solo concerts have followed since then: in 2017 the soprano saxophone concerto Abrasax for Anders Paulsson, in 2018 Eclipse for the violinist Hugo Ticciati and in 2022 the double concerto Tandem for the unusual combination of violin, bass clarinet and strings which was released on a critically acclaimed album in 2026 with Benjamin Schmid, Carl-Johan Stjernström and Musica Vitae.
Jörgen Dafgård’s repertoire also includes chamber music and solo pieces such as the clarinet quintet Whims and Wizardry and the quartet Mahler Revisited. Jörgen Dafgård has also composed for choir, most recently the composition of Erik Lindegren's Kosmisk moder for mixed choir and cello, which was recorded by Petri Sångare and cellist Lisa Ekmark in 2021. My Garden, Like the Beach, with lyrics by Emily Dickinson, has previously been published by Gehrmans.
Open Air – Double Concerto for violin, viola and strings, was premiered by Duo Gelland and the Öresund Chamber Orchestra in 2023. Jörgen Dafgård's cello concerto Ulysses for the multiple award-winning cellist Amalie Stalheim was premiered with the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra in the spring of 2026.
Jörgen Dafgård, who grew up in Sundsvall, has collaborated on several occasions with the Nordic Chamber Orchestra, which, among other things, premiered his Sinfonia No. 1 and the sinfonietta Esprit. The Malmö Symphony Orchestra's acclaimed premiere of Through Fire and Water (2011) was followed by several collaborations, including Tableau vivant with Johan Dalene as soloist. But the collaboration with orchestras also extends beyond Europe, not least in the form of the upcoming portrait album Jörgen Dafgård for orchestra with the Bogotà Symphony Orchestra conducted by Joachim Gustafsson.
