I. Springfield II. Catch Me If You Can III. Magical Backyard IV. Carousel V. Chasin' Goblins
"A few years ago I had a discussion with the pianist, and my old friend, Henrik Måwe about whether it would be possible to compose something that was equally exciting for a professional pianist as well as for an advanced piano student. Something that could convey both strong emotions but at the same time be playful and accessible. With different technical challenges in the different pieces but nothing so demanding that it would take years of practice to overcome. I decided to give the piano suite a try. The idea of something playful led me inspiration into the idea of children's play, and here my own children were a great inspiration and help. In the first movement, I imagine how it might sound if Claude Debussy traveled to the United States and by pure chance came across the cartoon character Bart Simpson (who after all, lives in the fictional town of Springfield) In the second movement, the right and left hands play awkwardly, and here one can think about how it might sound if Prokofiev and Bach tried to write a fugato together. The third slow movement is a reflection on how children see magic everywhere in play and how a backyard or forest grove suddenly transforms into a magical and fantastic landscape. In the fourth movement, we are taken on a carousel ride that may not be completely safe but all the more exciting. In the last movement, we go on a hunt to try to catch the unpleasant trolls. These trolls also have a surprising penchant for dancing, even if it doesn't always end well."
