Web comment by the composer: "Scorpius is the first of twelve piano pieces written based on the characters of the zodiac signs. I have let key words from the zodiac description have meaning for the character of each piano piece, but what has been most important in shaping the pieces is my own perception of the respective pianist's personality, temperament and playing style. I have tried as much as possible to ensure that each pianist has a piece connected to his "own" zodiac sign, even if it has not been possible in all cases. It is always fun to write for musicians you know personally It was precisely before this work, the piano piece Scorpius for Marianne Jacobs, that I got the idea to write a whole cycle of piano works for several of the pianists I have contact with and who are active in or have connections to southern Sweden. The piano pieces in the zodiac series should be considered recorded improvisations, rather celebrating the musical and spontaneous rather than the structured and thought out. The reason for this is that the piano is my main instrument and I want this, among other things, to leave its mark on this piano suite. However, when it comes to composing for piano, I feel both helped and limited by writing for an instrument that I play myself. Aided by my familiarity with the instrument and the literature but limited by my own level of playing technique and perception of what is idiomatic for the instrument. This relationship also characterizes the creation of these works. Scorpius is dedicated to Marianne Jacobs, who premiered the work in 1987 in Mexico City. The sign is associated with intelligence, perseverance and determination and the motto is: I'M IN CONTROL! Scorpius is recorded at SMIC (INFOGRAM/INFO-010) by Marianne Jacobs."
