Bo Nilsson was eighteen years old when in 1956 he broke through at a concert in Cologne on West German radio with a radical modernist debut work. But once in place, the "genius from Malmberget" simply did not venture into the concert hall.
Bo Nilsson has had an unusual ability to arouse astonishment. Not only his compositions but also through his personality, expressed in, for example, impactful debate posts and provocative answers to simple interview questions.
His instructions on how his music should be performed sometimes took unreasonable turns, he dealt with both musicians and pundits. He made a scandal of sorts by claiming in a public post that he himself was a fraud.
Over time, Nilsson switched to a more traditional, folk-oriented style. He has composed popular songs, he has written music for film and TV.
