Maria durch ein Dornwald ging>/em> is an old traditional 'macaronic' verse, i.e. poetry that mixes different languages, common among students as a joke during the Renaissance and Baroque. This particular text in German and Greek was printed for the first time in 1850, and then with seven verses.
It was the setting of other traditional Macaronic carols, In dulci jubilo and above all There is no rose of such virtue , that gave me inspiration for this piece, the compositional challenge of making the timbre and feeling of the different languages fuse into a unity.

Maria durch ein Dornwald was first performed by the vocal ensemble ARS LONGA in Enskede church on December 17, 2017.” - David Åberg
