In 2024, Matthew Peterson was awarded the prestigious Swedish Christ Johnson Prize for Högalidsmässan. The motivation was: "A grand sacred work that, both in its accessibility and scope, sends an inspiring message to many of the country's church choirs. With a rhythmically varied and brilliant musical language, Matthew Peterson breathes new life into the deeply touching message of the Mass."
The Högalid Mass was commissioned by the Högalid parish in Stockholm for the 100th anniversary of Högalid Church and premiered in June 2023 by the Högalid Chamber Choir, Högalid Chamber Orchestra, Nils Larsson, organ and Benedikt Melichar, conductor.
