The suite The Japanese Seasons for SATB a cappella is dedicated to Erik Westberg's Vocal Ensemble. Alvin Vikman is a composer and pianist, born in 2001, and began his education at the Lilla Akademien in Stockholm with Matthew Peterson as his teacher. He later studied with Jan Sandström and Fredrik Högberg in Piteå where he received a bachelor's degree in composition. Alvin says: "I have always been drawn to Japanese poetry and The Japanese Seasons is an exploration of this fascination, using madrigalism - a technique where the music reflects the words. As a flower falls or white fabrics flutter in the wind, the music follows and imitates these movements. The specific poems used are from the Hyakunin isshu, a collection of older Japanese poems. The verses act as time capsules and provide glimpses of Japan from over a millennium ago. My music is an interpretation of the soundscape of ancient Japan, attempting to capture the magic embedded in the poems."
