Nordic Jazz – Jazz Improvisation on Piano contains methods for introducing and developing improvisation. It is based on ten compositions written by some of the Nordic region's foremost jazz musicians: Lars Jansson, Jan Lundgren, Esbjörn Svensson, and others.
Each song is presented as a lead sheet, a written-out piano arrangement, as well as unique improvisation tips and form suggestions for each song. Backing tracks for all songs are recorded and available online in multiple versions. The goal of the material is to present beautiful songs that can be played exactly as written, offer an inspiring path into improvisation, and to introduce the reader to some of our fantastic Nordic jazz composers.
The material is suitable for teaching students who have played for several years at cultural schools, primary schools, high schools, folk high schools, or universities. It also works excellently for teaching with two students. Classical pianists or educators who want to approach improvisation can also greatly benefit from the material. The author, Martin Berggren, is a jazz pianist, arranger, composer, and piano educator. He teaches piano and ear training at the Malmö Academy of Music and at Lars-Erik Larsson High School in Lund.
