Web comment by the composer: "AS in Memoriam was composed in 1999 in memory of Arnold Schönberg and his masterpiece Verklärte Nacht, composed 100 years earlier, in 1899. In AS in Memoriam I wanted to reflect the tone, gestures and musical characters found in Schönberg's works. Originally written Verklärte Nacht for string sextet, but the composer himself made two adaptations for string orchestra, one in 1917 and one in 1943. AS in Memoriam was originally composed for 15 strings (5-4-3-2-1, op50a) but is also available in a version for string orchestra (op50b). The smaller version was commissioned by Lund's New Chamber Orchestra, which premiered the work in Lund in 1999 under the direction of Sören Nilzén. The larger version is dedicated to Neeme Järvi, who in May 2001 premiered the work with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra in Gothenburg's concert hall. In bar 49 i there is a musical quote from Verklärte Nacht, as a resounding confirmation of Verklärte Nacht's influence on AS in Memoriam."
