Winner in the category Art Music Prize of the Year – chamber music/small ensemble at the Musikförläggernas Pris gala organized by the Swedish Music Publishers' Association, SMFF.
Bells and Waves was commissioned by, and dedicated to, the New European Ensemble with conductor Christian Karlsen and premiered at the White Crow Music Festival at the opening concert in the Staadsgehoorzaal, Leiden, Holland.
It is a chamber symphony in five movements that in various ways relates to experiences in the composer's childhood: bells and water.
The motif is an anagram of the composer's last name: S (t) AE (r, n) = Ess, A and E as the harmonic base and backbone of the entire symphony.
Sound samples: New European Ensemble, conductor Christian Karlsen (recording from the premiere)
