In the late 1940s, the Swedish composer Lars-Erik Larsson wrote 12 Concertini – twelve smaller solo concertos for various instruments accompanied by a string orchestra, all composed to be performed by amateur orchestras, while the solo parts made higher demands on the skill of the instrumentalists.
With inspiration from Lars-Erik Larsson, Daniel Berg has written a work in two movements for a virtuoso solo marimba in combination with a soft string sound - in classical style, but with clear elements of jazz harmony. Together with experienced string teachers, Daniel has written parts that can be played by amateur orchestras together with a skilled marimba bassist.
In his Concertino for Marimba and Strings, Daniel wants to highlight the melodic percussion instrument marimba, and at the same time inspire young musicians to discover classical percussion.
Daniel Berg, composer, marimba bassist, chamber musician and percussion teacher, combines the role of a versatile musician with being a teacher. He is a lecturer in musical design at Gothenburg University and teaches percussion and chamber music at HSM in Gothenburg, KMH in Stockholm and the Academy of Music in Örebro.
His passion for the marimba as a solo and chamber instrument has led to close collaborations with a number of composers who have written new music for the instrument, resulting in over 200 premieres. As a soloist, he often participates in international percussion festivals and he has recorded a large number of records with the marimba at the center.
As a composer, Daniel has written a large number of solo works for marimba, for example Over the Moon, December and Blue Memories , today all well-known standard works for marimba. Gehrmans Musikförlag has previously published his work I'm Nobody! for voice choir, percussion and balloons, and Karawane for voice choir and percussion.
