The Piano Quintet is based on a misreading of the opening of the Marche funèbre from Beethoven's 'Eroica' symphony. Acting as an idée fixe, the bass motif of Beethoven's march veers off into abstraction before being re-established, providing a palpable link between the quintet and its model. The quintet also draws on melodic and harmonic outlines from the 'Eroica', saturating them with foreign materials, while progressing relatively faithfully through Beethoven's sweeping timeline. On a smaller scale, elements of the 'Eroica' are interposed in orderly and disorderly ways, and disrupted with extreme changes of tempo, to create a dreamlike impression of the original.
