Rosenborg Gehrman's scholarship in 2024 is awarded to oboist Josef Wijk
Rosenborg Gehrman's 2024 scholarship of SEK 150,000 is awarded to oboist Josef Wijk.
The Royal Academy of Music's scholarship jury writes:
"Josef Wijk plays with an obvious musicality and stage presence. With technical brilliance, he combines his beautiful and dynamic sound with a highly personal expression. As suddenly as expected, one of the greatest oboe talents in Swedish music history has made an entrance."
Josef Wijk grew up in Örebro. He obtained his bachelor's degree at the Academy of Music and Drama in Gothenburg, where he studied with Mårten Larsson. He then continued with master's studies at the Haute école de musique in Geneva, under Professor Alexei Ogrintchouk, solo oboist in the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. There he took his master's degree this spring and was awarded the highest score for his graduation concert. Josef has won prizes in several national and international competitions for young musicians, including the Polstjärne Prize. He likes to play chamber music and in 2023 and 2024 was selected for the Norwegian talent program Papillon, where he participated as a festival artist during Valdres Sommersymfoni. In recent years, Josef has been a member of EUYO (European Union Youth Orchestra), which has played in the Elbphilharmonie, Concertgebouw and Carnegie Hall, among others.
The scholarship is handed over at the Royal Swedish Academy of Music's formal banquet on 25 November.
