WORLD PREMIERE Paulsson plays Schnelzer May 8-9
"This work is my declaration of love to the Swedish nature and our unique landscape," says Albert Schnelzer about his solo concerto for soprano saxophone and orchestra, Arctic Starflower, which is being premiered by the Dalasinfoniettan and Anders Paulsson under the direction of Claire Levacher.
In Musik i Dalarna's three short films, Albert Schnelzer talks about Arctic Starflower.
Friends Schnelzer and Anders Paulsson have been each other's sounding board during the work on the concerto, which was inspired by the modest arctic starflower. The work is a joint commission from Dalasinfoniettan, the Norrbotten Chamber Orchestra, and the Jönköping Sinfonietta.
"I have tried to capture the Nordic melancholy and how the proximity to nature and water affects us all. The first movement is fundamentally a triplet polska, where the music depicts a Swedish summer storm. Rain and wind strike with full force, only to retreat and return in the form of showers, downpours, and thunder. The second movement is a depiction of the modest arctic starflower and its relationship to the forests where it grows. The final movement depicts a child playing in puddles on a warm summer day, stomping their feet into the water with full force.”
