Don't be afraid of the dark was commissioned and premiered by St. Göran's Chamber Choir for a concert project with the theme "Don't be afraid, Maria" For the same concert, Mathias also wrote music to text from Mendelssohn's oratorio Elia, see GE 12930.

Mathias is a well-known jazz pianist, but also composes music for choir, in a style that combines jazz sounds with classical choral music.
